Spain Loves Breaks!

Spain is blowing up the breaks scene hard these days with breaks festivals like Ultra Tear Nation.  From deeper progressive vibes to booty bouncin' madness they have an army of breakers and it's only getting bigger.  Breakbeat headliners come together from across the globe including Curtis B of illeven eleven out of Chicago!  Here's a few tracks from some Spanish breaks artists that I've grown particularly fond of.  From remixes to originals they know how to put it down proper.

The Baymont Bross will be making their first US appearance in St. Louis at Electro Rodeo.  Their sound is a combo of booty and electro breaks and I can't get enough.  Danceable breakbeats is what I expect and they deliver it on a silver platter every time.

Baymont Bross Feat RayNPro - Twisted Metal (Original Mix) by The Pooty Club Records

Beat Assassins - Straight To The World (Baymont Bross Remix) by The Pooty Club Records

I've been playing tracks from David Casal aka Deibeat for quite some time now, from the originals he dropped on iBreaks to some new tunes rockin' on The Pooty Club Records.  Always with a down low driving groove his breaks range from progressive and dark to techy/electro.  Have a listen to one of his latest:

Louisville Rocks It In More Ways Than One

Being on the up and up for some time now Louisville, KY is home to quite a few big contributors to our local EDM culture and beyond.  First, I'll say that pretty much any party I've been to in Louisville has had a great energy about it and that goes for their talent as well; after all, they do provide the boom.  From House, Techno, and Breaks to Dubstep and everywhere in between, they pretty much have it going on in one way or another.  Events are thrown all the time, but the people that contribute to them make them what they are.

el PRODUKDo is one of my favorite breaks DJs from the area, but that's not where he stops.  His sets cover almost any genre that you could possibly want to hear.  He's a very versatile DJ that I first saw when I played at Auditory Hallucination with Monk at the old Fuzion.  I hadn't danced that hard in a long time as he was tagging with DJ Sarge and dropped some HOT originals.  Check his latest mix for a trip through it all, breaks, rock, rap, even a hot glitched out Super Mario remix intro...

el PRODUKDo - Touching Down 2011 by el PRODUKDo

Another ville'n to look out for is Glenn Giles aka Unkle Funk aka G.F.G.  With residencies in Louisville and Nashville under his belt as well as his website featuring a weekly podcast, he is doing the city proud.  Glenn doesn't only mix but produces house as well.  With a touch of sex appeal, Glenn's deep vibes shine through in his latest track "Streetlite Searchparty".  Check it out below and leave some love on his soundcloud!

Quadrat Beat, Davip, and Sound of the Future...Garage

Here's a standard issue Bit Flip fave from Quadrat Beat.  It's along the lines of what you would expect from the Latvian breaks beast with a killer lead that hits the upper mid range right in the sweet spot.  Keep a look out for this one dropping on beatport soon!

Lethalness - State Of Calme (Quadrat Beat Remix) by Quadrat Beat

The track keeps on holding on...here's another remix of Rusko for the breakbeat minded from Davip.  Russian born Davip has over 30 releases from breaks to drum and bass on labels such as Ayra Recordings, Hardcore Beats, and Cut & Run.  Check it for the standard hold on goodness you come to know and love from this one.

Last is a whole different vibe that I've been digging lately, and it goes by the name of Future Garage.  With a two-step feel, the sounds of future garage make it out to the dancefloor with a passion for old school speed garage fans as well as the serial groover.  Today we have a track from Splintz, a UK producer that's been in the game for quite some time and it's evident in his old school feel.  Definitely a producer to be watched for upcoming innovative tunes.

Native Instruments - The Razor's Edge

With an already impressive product lineup, there's one more thing to to add to the Native Instruments pile.  Razor is their newest VST that lets the user visualize as they shape sound.  The interface remains just as clean and easy to use as the rest of their product line and sticks to the unspoken motto of functional before fashionable.  Razor also uses additive synthesis as its method of sound generation.  Additive synthesis uses the principle of the fourier theorem that any waveform may be created from a series of pure sine waves.  As nerdy as that previous statement was, that means ridiculously crisp sound for you, the musician.  Check out Razor on the NI site!

Gettin' Slimey and Magua's Mix

Sludge Records is steadily dropping great tracks and the latest from Specimen A keeps up to par. The vibe from sludge is that of intelligent dub, grimey yet refined enough to make anyone get down. Donna Dee's vocals fit like a glove in this track and the overall energy of Sludge. It reminds me of the Deekline and Wizard track with Yolanda - Ready For Your Love.  Love the female vox, love the slimey synths, love the total package, check the preview.

Magua from Columbus is up to no good with a new Electro House mix posted up just last night.  Check the download for sure as this is a keeper you'll be putting on your iThing in no time...  Filled with a ton of great tracks including that of Columbus's own Digiraati. Peep the mix, leave a comment!

Access Denied and Raj Break It Up

I hope everyone has their crates full at beatport for an eventful day of donating to the cause by purchasing new music.  Access Denied is at it again with two new breaks releases today that you can snatch up as part of your new set.  Both are ear bruisers for the breaks head or dubstepper alike.  Glitchy and heavily modulated leads is a trademark sound that isn't going away any time soon.  Check out the bass heavy sounds and make sure to purchase your tracks TODAY as part of the relief effort.

Here's a freebie for you today as well compliments of Raj Marathe out of Rochester, NY.  Raj has been flying under my radar for quite some time as a breaks producer of over 7 years.  His remixes/rerubs are evidence of this experience with a serious eye for detail as well as musicality that we all love.  His remixes are posted on his soundcloud page and this is just the first of many available for download so take advantage while you can!

Step your Fresh Up Fridays - B-Phreak Breaks Mix n Then Some

Since disaster struck in Japan, there have been quite a few efforts put together by The Red Cross and many others for donations to be put towards recovery efforts.  The music community is helping out as well and there are a few ways you can put your money to good use for both you and the cause.  Beatport is running their campaign on Monday March 21st in which all profits (minus artist royalties) from tracks purchased will be going to relief efforts in Japan.  If you're going to make a large purchase, wait til then for the benefit of others.  Another way to help is to get the 32 track release from Heartbeats.  All proceeds will be donated and you end up with 32 new tunes in whatever format you choose, clearly a win/win.

Back with a new mix from B-Phreak (Bernie Ott), breaks producer out of Ingelheim, Germany.  B-Phreak has been steadily releasing tracks since 2003 with his newest release out on Kick It Recordings.  Check his newest mix for some breakbeat goodness in your life.

Here's one for the locals from Family Affair in '07.  A killer excerpt from Grape Ape's (Seth Braz) live set containing only the finest liquid drum and bass.  One of my favorite genres that I never get to play out.  It's my dirty little secret, but maybe I'll bust it out sometime, who knows.  Check the mix and hit him up on Soundcloud, let him know what you think!

Breaking 1,000 Hits and Broken Beats

Thanks everyone for helping me break 1,000 hits on the blog, glad to see you're diggin' the content!  I have some plans in store for the rest of the year and beyond so keep checkin back for new industry info, tunes, and maybe even some swag.  Now onto what's up and up in the world of electronic dance music!

I was talking with Curtis B of Illeven Eleven Recordings yesterday and was tipped off to some new track previews on his soundcloud.  He's got new collab work up with some dope artists soon to hit beatport and other digital music distribution avenues.  Also lined up in the near future for him are some international acts in both Spain and Canada!  My personal fave out of the three is "Headrush" with the 8-bit synth intro to the side-chained lead synth.  Pretty good way to start off the new year the ill way!

Farace and LOT49 Goodness

My man Paul Farace of Kick It Recordings dropped a new summer breaks mix today and now it's off to you!   At a runtime of about 40 minutes, it's enough to satisfy even the most hungry of breakbeat fiends.  Get the download while it's still available and get hip to Farace if you're not already.  With steady releases on his label, shows on NSB radio, and upcoming WMC gigs, he's definitely not to be missed.  Check out Farace and the rest of the Kick It crew alongside Ed Solo, Baby Anne, and more at the Truskool Breaks WMC event Wed. Tech Funk and Electro Breaks you say?

So today I found a bit of a different vibe in the in the air of the breaks world.  It's all about droning synths, whitenoise, and driving basslines.  Here's a definite winner in the field of Tech Funk from Hedflux being released on the LOT49 "7 Year Itch" compilation March 21st.  With a splash surrounded by reverb and whitenoise the track begins at the first drop with a grinding distorted synth and builds from there to a pleasantly full sounding package filled with new elements from far and wide.  Meets all my requirements for Tech Funk goodness, how about yours?

Meat Katie & Dylan Rhymes - Rollplayer (Hedflux remix) by Hedflux

Another hot remix from Deenk of Amatol - Cherry Lips.  Deenk is a relatively new breakbeat producer from Spain, but he is hitting the scene with top notch original productions and remixes on various labels including his own Hard & Hits.  His latest remix is scheduled for release on Raveart Recordings and is definitely not one to be missed.  The track has a steady driving feel to it as would be expected from electro breaks, but retains a very techy element as well as great breakdowns and builds.  Enough descriptions though, check it for yourself.

Step your Fresh Up Fridays - Breakspoll and then some

Happy Friday once again!  This week I have a few mixes from overseas heavyweights.  Whether you're into breaks or not, I'm pretty sure one of these mixes is going to get you right so here it goes.

After Breakspoll of course we're expecting some killer mixes, and this one is no let down.  Elite Force brings it again to Annie Nightingale's Radio One broadcast with a featured breaks mix for your eardrums.  Though it's only a twenty minute mix, it hits all the right spots for both dubsteppers and b-boys alike.  Although Simon works closely with damn near everyone in the industry, he retains a style of his own.  You can see the difference in his productions since his recent work doing soundtracks and soundscapes and it's no disappointment.

Next up is a mix from Philly Blunt, producer out of Perth, Australia comin' to rock you with some original bootlegs.  From Damian Marley to Fedde Le Grande to Outkast this mix is pretty much sure to get the party jumpin'.  Holds a good energy all the way through to bounce into the weekend right!  See you out there...

Man vs. Maschine

I've been looking into the Native Instruments lineup a lot these days since I've been paying close attention to Traktor Scratch Pro 2, but I haven't touched on many of their other products.  Maschine is aimed at the producer/live performer that needs to get ideas out quick and wants a control surface to do it on.  It's pretty much an MPC on steroids that talks to your computer.  It has sampling capabilities, midi I/O ports for hardware sync, huge stock sound library, intuitive control, functions as a midi controller, and the list keeps going.  From getting down skeletons of tracks to producing full out, Maschine can do it all.  There is one thing you do have to keep in mind; You will need an audio interface in order to use Maschine live since there are no audio ports on the unit itself.

The way the Maschine software talks to the hardware is where it really all comes together.  For those producers that are fully set on hardware, you never really have to look at the computer screen to find what you're looking for.  The two large LCD displays dynamically change depending on what mode Maschine is working in.  From chopping samples to auditioning sounds and creating beats, the workflow of Maschine is smooth sailing.  The browser is laid out similar to other NI products where you can search for a sound by a description of the sound.  You can also tag your own samples for use with Maschine so your sounds are always easy to find.  The other aspect of Maschine is for live performance, and no doubt it's powerful enough to provide you with what you're looking for.  Check out Jeremy Ellis and DJ Shiftee rockin' out with Maschine and Maschine + Traktor to get a sample of what it's capable of.

Booty Breaks? Yes please...

Some of my fave breaks artists just dropped another hot one.  The Whip It EP from Deekline and Duston Hulton drops today on Rat Records.  The original is just what you would expect from the likes of Deekline and Dustin, full of booty and even a Dazz Band sample...let it whip ya'll.  Check the original and all the remixes below.  I'm really diggin' the feel of the Neighbour remix, pretty fly ish, can you say future disco?

Chase and Status Remix by Specimen A

Specimen A drops this bomb of a remix of Chase and Status for the remix competition.  Starting off with Delilah's piercing vocals the track has a great feel from the beginning.  It peaks just right and has that emotional touch all the way through to the drum and bass outro.  It tells the story both with the instrumental and the vocals, a rare find these days.  You can find the remix parts on the Chase and Status website for those producers that want to give it a shot.  It's a great opportunity to get the high quality parts of the track to do with what you do.  Hope to hear some killer mixes from locals and beyond!

Funk In Your Face

I've been a huge fan of the old school funk vibe in EDM for a long time now and here are a couple of tracks to illustrate just what you can do with it.  Fort Knox Five out of Washington DC have been putting down the funk since 2003 in live performances and DJ sets that definitely get your feet movin'.  Right off the bat you get that vibe you expect from FK5, here you go:

Fort Knox Five - The Sax Pusher vs. Bambaataa (DC's Finest Remint) by fortknoxfive

Next up are a few upcoming releases on the iBreaks label.  The first track "Rock the Disco" fuses electronic elements and old school funk all in one.  The massive builds of traditional EDM are very evident in both the intro and the first big breakdown.  The second track on the EP, Funkology is exactly what you would expect from the name.  A true example of funk from the expert in the field.  It hits all the organic elements from keys to sax, flutes, horns, and everywhere in between.  Definitely keeping this one in the crates for just the right time.

Dirty & Acid :: Rock The Disco - Funkology :: iBreaks Spain by iBreaks

Last off my man A-Skillz brings it with a new mini-mix of tracks he's been playing out for the last bit.  His skills on the decks are rivaled by few and this is just another example of that.  This one is definitely going on your mp3 player no matter how much you wanna fight it.  Funk to soul to straight up dance and turntablism, this is the mix to get your week poppin' off right...

Step your Fresh Up Fridays - Breaks, Shows, and BASS!

So we have a lot going on tonight in both Cincinnati and Columbus.  First off Cincitronics is throwing an industry night at Mac's Pizza Pub in Clifton featuring Dave Owen.  If you're a dnb addict, industry head, or just love having a good time it's the spot for you tonight in Cincinnati for EDM. Here's a sample of what Dave brings to the table, deep drum and bass vibes!

Life Moves Fast - CLIP by Dave Owen

Next up in Columbus is ColumBASS 3.0 <Neon Light District> brought to you by Magua and Free Water at Bernie's Bagel and Deli.  Columbus really knows how to pack the place out with their last event reaching capacity at 10pm!  A few of the local faves always bring down the house with sounds ranging from dubstep to electro house and even some trip hop and hip hop thrown in the mix.  Whatever sounds you dig, you'll get your fill and then some...oh and did I mention $1 rum and coke?!  Sure to get crazy so be warned!  Here's the recording from last ColumBASS to get you right.

ColumBASS 2.0 - Live @ Bernie's Distillery February 18th 2011 by Magua

Now for the tracks to get you hyped.  Access Denied brings it to the table featuring vocalist Spoek Mathambo which you may have heard in the track "Invincible" with Missill.  Overall a killer glitchy breaks track with some awesome synth strings and a bit of dutch electro flavor.  Check the preview and be on the look for this to drop soon!

Starting out more techy than most electro house tracks, the LOOPERS bring us Bass Down Low featuring Cataracs.  A proper buildup to the drop and the distorted synth lead makes this one a winner in my eyes and I'm sure yours too.  The vocal hook is too catchy for the dance floor to avoid, drop it and find out for yourself -- free download at their site for posting on facebook or twitter.

With a classic house feel Treasure Fingers brings you this killer remix of Avicii and Sebastien Drums.  The vocal is unavoidably awesome and good til the last drop.  The filtered guitar, slap bass and quirky stabby synth seal the deal bringin' the funky good times.

Finally to leave you off with a bang, William Van Dyke and Timothy Getz re-edit of  Raw To Da Floor.  A killer re-edit will leave you wanting more and that's certainly what WVD and Timothy do.  Check his soundcloud for other re-works as well, constantly coming up with some great ish.  Enjoy your weekend as always and don't forget to step your fresh up!

Soulful Breakbeats from Pyramid

The duo of Nick D'Silva and Scott Maclean bring you some great low key soulful breaks via their duo Pyramid.  Dubstep or breaks, they have you covered with a sound tailored to suit your style.  Their remix of Queen Latifah and Al Green is a mellowed out monster.  With a classic jungle feel to it I'm sure the crowd will dig no matter where you drop this one.  Bring it down low with the housey keys then on to the next one!

SP-6? That's wack son...well...maybe not

Although this feature has been out for some time now, I feel that people don't get the power of using it in their sets and it is often overlooked.  From ad-lib drums to dropping vocal samples to using it for instant doubles on a currently playing track to free up a deck, it's quite useful.  Now since SSL doesn't sync to a master clock like Traktor's sample decks, the SP-6 can fall out of time with pitch changes if you're mixing looped tracks in it and changing speed, so be careful, there's a nudge feature for that.  The great thing about the SP-6 is that you have six slots that essentially have full deck control on them.  You have a volume fader, pitch slider, multiple play modes, overviews, multiple banks, output selection, and more features that I will delve into as we go.  This isn't a complete example of all features, but you'll get the idea.

The real value that I see in it is the fact that a DJ can be much more creative with a midi controller and decks that just limited to using the keyboard shortcuts for triggering samples.  Now the list of gear could get pretty extensive if you want hands on control of ALL features of the SP-6 and all channels, but I'll just focus a bit on how I have mine set up.  I mapped my Akai LPD-8 to control the SP-6 on one of the scenes available for it (there are 4 altogether).  Since the LPD-8 only has 8 pads and 8 knobs, I decided that the first 6 pads will trigger samples and the first 6 knobs will control the volume of the samples.  It's just a quick and dirty method of being able to cue up an additional track once you have them in sync.  When you drop the currently playing track on the deck to the sample player, it will instant double and match the trackhead position and playback speed.  NOTE: if you don't have instant doubles enabled, this doesn't work so make sure to check your setup options!  You also want to make sure that the output selector is then on the currently playing deck so that you can start to cue another track and make sure it's not cueing live.

With the ability to change the volume of the SP-6 sample track with the knobs on the LPD, you can still mix with the controller.  The other thing I use the SP-6 for is to drop snippets of vocals and drums.  For these I'll use the one shot mode and drop individual drum samples (or airhorns haha) into the slots and drum during a breakdown or whatever part you want.  It's all up to you what you want to do with it, but that's my quick suggestion.  Be back for more news on ish soon!

Breakbeat Banger with Gustolab

Fixx and Keith McKenzie do it again along with Gustolab on the Holla If You See Me EP out now on Beatport.  Gustolab is out of NYC and dropped a hot remix on i11even eleven with two of my fave vocalists over breaks -- Sue Cho and Whiskey Pete.  Originally from Peru he moved to Miami when he was 20 and fell in love with EDM.  After making moves in Miami he relocated to Brooklyn  to start his own production company and keep on the grind.  Here's just a quick preview of his remix and his 2011 mix to get you bumpin'!
